April 13, 2017 Red Sox 4, Pirates 3
3-6 Record in 2017
The Really Good
Chad Kuhl. Great site to see Chad Kuhl have a dominant outing after his control was all over the place in his start against Atlanta over the weekend. 6.1 innings, 5 hits, 1 earned run. He added 6 strikeouts to go with that line. The slider paired nicely with the fastball which he commanded all afternoon. Maybe a different game if they let him try to work out of the 7th, but nothing wrong with pulling him when Hurdle did with the pitch count getting high.
The Not So Bad
Starling Marte. We saw the Bucs with a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 8th and the bases loaded with 1 out. Hanley Ramirez hit a bases clearing triple over Marte’s head, tying the game while the relay got Mookie on a play at the plate. People are calling Marte’s effort lazy and saying he could’ve had that ball. Yes, he could’ve. But the ball was slicing away from him towards right center and the wind was pushing the ball away from him towards right center as well. Sure, he took a bad route, but that play was far from routine. The wind was messing with pop ups and fly balls all afternoon at Fenway. It messed up Jordy and Chris Stewart on pop ups in foul ground where they should’ve made plays but last second gusts kept the balls away from them. Marte is an elite defender. If you question that then you’re mad for no reason and just a horrible baseball fan. Calm down.
The Very Ugly
Phil Gosselin. Got the start today against the left handed Eduardo Rodriguez and was anything but productive. 0-3 at the plate and is still looking for his first hit of 2017 in his few AB’s. My biggest problem was not catching a sure out in the 8th inning on a throw from Marte. Benintendi hit a soft liner that dropped in front of Marte with 1 out in the 8th, Pedroia had to hold up half way cause it looked like Marte could’ve caught it, but it fell in and the throw from Marte beat Pedroia easily to the bag. The throw was in the dirt, but Gosselin, you gotta pick that man. Him missing that throw bugged me more than anything else during the Pirates breakdown in the 8th inning.
Weekend series with the Cubs in Chicago starts tomorrow afternoon.
